Hello Everyone,

Hope you are all off to a great start of the week. We will be running committee elections for 2011/2012 session. This will take place on Thursday March 10th, 2011 6.30pm - 8.30pm in P/T/005. Like our usual events there will be free food and drinks and you can bring your friends to support you.

We hope you have all been impressed with the achievements of the current committee. We only hope that next year this society grows even stronger and bigger . A position on the committee involves real responsibility and initiative. You will be holding events for some of the biggest graduate recruiters and helping students at York to increase their knowledge of each industry, improve their 'soft skills' and hopefully learn a lot along the way. As part of a national organisation, committee members are invited to exclusive recruitment and skills events with some of the biggest names, gaining close business contacts with heads of HR in their respective companies. Being part of this society will give your CV a boost as well as actually make you put employability skills to practise.

Let's Build a Smarter Planet

E-mail sent by Itoro Etuk, Monday, 6th December 2010 @ 3:38pm

Hello everyone,

We have been asked by Amit Sinha one of the organisers of 'Let's Build a Smarter Planet' to forward this very important message to you all. The event is on Thursday in the Computer Science Pod, Department of Computer Science Heslington East Campus 6pm to 9pm. There will be a free buffet there at the event Cheers!

Dear Bright Futures York Members,

I am writing on behalf of Students for a Smarter Planet to invite you to our inaugural event: "Let's build a smarter planet".  The Students for a Smarter Planet organisation (SFSP) was born from the Smarter Planet JAM in April 2009, bringing together students from around the world to promote the Smarter Planet concept within Universities.

In the first event of its kind globally, we have brought together key individuals from The University of York and IBM to present the Smarter Planet concept. This event has already attracted many senior academics and significant number of students from a variety of disciplines. Representatives of York City Council will also be attending.

"Let's build a smarter planet" will be held on *9th December 2010* at *6pm - 9pm*, at *Computer Science Pod - University of York*, Heslington East Campus, Heslington, York, YO10 5NB.

The event will include welcome talks from the Head of Computer Science, followed by a Smarter Planet overview by Gerry Riley. We will then move on to a talk on Smarter Cities, which will be given by Ian Abbott-Donnelly. Following this will be a Smarter Campus Workshop, which will be delivered by Amit Sinha, the UK Lead for Students for a Smarter Planet. The event will conclude with a networking session and a buffet.

We believe that this event will act as a platform for IBM, The University of York and York City Council to develop a collaborative relationship that will provide several key opportunities in the future.

Please RSVP to Amit Sinha at as647@york.ac.uk.

8 Task Challenge in partnership with Grant Thornton

E-mail sent by Itoro Etuk, Thursday, 2nd December 2010 @ 11:37am

Hello everyone,
Sorry for sending another email today but we have been asked to forward this email to you. This is an exciting opportunity so please do read the email. Cheers!

Hi,

Please find below the email text which we would be very grateful if you could forward onto your society list. There is also some hard marketing material in the post for your attention.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any further questions and, as always, thank you for your support in helping us promote our events.
Kind Regards,
Kate

Hello,

I’m writing to let you know about a fantastic opportunity for your society members to have a great day out whilst also being in with a shot of winning prize money for your society.

The exciting 8 Task Challenge in partnership with Grant Thornton will be taking place for the second year on 9 April 2011. It will allow you to test yourselves against other students from universities in the UK, all with the aim of a chance of winning a part of an£8,500 prize fund!

The event kicked off to a fantastic start in 2010, with over 100 teams from universities all over the UK taking part. Students truly had a fun-filled day in Rutland Water:

The 8 Task Challenge is first and foremost a whole lot of fun, a great chance to enhance your CV and also a real chance for any team (of any fitness as we had none!) to win some money - a fantastic day out'

‘It was one of the most fun days I've had in a long time and I met some great people. It was so well organised and the tasks were really exciting and varied. We're definitely coming back next year!’

The upcoming event is going to be even bigger and better and is being supported by BAE Systems, CIMA, Deutsche Bank, Enterprise Rent-A-CarE.ON, The Financial Services Authority, and The Royal Bank of Scotland Group.

The event will involve you working in teams of four to complete a combination of mental and physical tasks – think of it as a cross between adventure racing and the krypton factor!

The mental challenges will test your skills and competencies similar to how graduate recruiters would test these during the recruitment process, while the physical challenges are an exciting combination of canoeing, cycling and running. The day will then conclude with a free BBQ and prize-giving ceremony.

There are 13 different competition categories, increasing your chances of winning on the day. The overall winners get £1,200 for their team plus another £1,200 for their university club or society!

I have some flyers and posters for the event, and if you let me know I would be more than happy to post them to you so that you can distribute them amongst your members. For further information about the day, and to apply please visit www.8taskchallenge.co.ukwhere you can also see some video footage of the last event.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact us at info@8taskchallenge.co.uk or 01491 828915.
