Thanks again for signing up for Bright Futures York. This is the first of the weekly emails you will receive from us about employer events taking place.

Week 2

Government Economic Service, Tomorrow (Tue) 1pm P/T/007 - If you are studying Economics or a degree where Economics is the major component and are interested in a career with the civil service, this event is for you!  Find out from a previous intern at the Department for Work and Pensions what it’s like, and get some great tips from their recruitment team on the application process for their internships and graduate jobs.

Bright Futures and Econsoc bring you the Bank of England, Tue 15th Oct 6pm, ATB/057 - Find out what a career with the UK’s central bank will entail and what internships and graduate jobs they have to offer.  The second part of the event will be a chance to practice those crucial assessment centre skills.  BofE recruit from all degree disciplines  Please register for this event here to secure your place.

First of all, welcome to those of you who signed up today and welcome back to returning members.

Over the coming weeks we are going to be running events featuring some the biggest and best graduate recruiters out there. Here is a taste of whats to come:

1. Tue 8th Oct 1pm in P/T/007 (Physics/Exhibition Centre) - Government Economic Service with Econsoc and Careers - a chance to find out about what a career as a government economist involves, as well as tips on how to apply for their internships and graduate positions. 

2. Tue 15th Oct 6pm in ATB/057 (Seebohm Rowntree Building) - Bank of England - find out about what opportunities BofE and also how to do well at assessment centres that you may encounter when applying for internships or graduate jobs.

3. Mon 21st Oct 7pm P/L/001 - Introducing PwC and Pinsent Masons - Presentations and then drinks, canapés and networking with two of the best graduate recruiters out there.

4. Thu 11th November - National Employability Conference - 100 of the biggest graduate recruiters will do skills sessions on how to do well at interviews and assessment centres and how to make your application stand out. Plus networking opportunities with employers and students from other top universities. 

5. Thu 21st Nov - How to do business in China with Absolute Internship - A fascinating presentation from founder of Absolute internship and a chance to find out about internships abroad.

6. January - Retro gaming with Thales 

The Bright Futures network is funded by a whole host of top graduate recruiters. If you have any ideas for events or there is a particular company you would like to see on campus, do get in touch, we are very much open to suggestions. Furthermore, if you would be interested to getting involved in the running of events please let us know, we would love to hear from you.

Hi all

Hope exams have gone well and also as many of you as possible managed to secure the internships or graduate jobs you were after.

If you haven't, don't be too disspointed, you are not at all alone. However, we would strongly point you in the direction of the Student Internship Bureau which arranages internships purely for York students. Hi All 

Our elections will now be taking place in the coming week (week 3) If you haven't already applied to join the comittee there is still time! This is your chance to become directly involved in the UKs largest student-led careers society. Bright Futures is present at the UK’s top universities including Nottingham, Imperial, UCL, Durham, LSE as well as York. 

You will help bring some of the biggest employers in the UK to campus as well as have the opportunity to further your own skills and improve your prospects of getting an internship/graduate job

ALL Positions are up for grabs and are as follows:

President; Secretary; Treasurer; Events Officers [2]; Corporate Liaison Officers (2) Marketing Officer and IT Officer

For the role you wish to apply for, please send a small application of no more than 200 words to brightfutures@yusu.org which might include:

- Why your skills/experience would be a good match for the position.
- Any events you have been involved in organising 
- Any you would plan to run, should you be successful in gaining a place on the committee.

Elections will be held in Week 3 at 6.30pm in YourSpace at the YUSU Student Centre. All applications must be submitted before election night. 

You will be required to prepare a short speech (no more than 2 minutes) on why you are best for the position and any events you have ideas for. Positions will be decided by a group ballot vote on the night. You are permitted to bring a few friends along for support!

Holiday Update

Hi folks

We trust the holidays are going well for you and the prospect of exams around the corner isn't causing too much gloom! 

Also hope as many of those who wanted to secure internships and graduates jobs already have done so. If not though don't despair! You're not alone and there are many more opportunities available (see the bottom of this email)

Here are a few things we think you should know about:

1 Bright Futures Elections
Want to get in involved in running one a society that is part of the biggest network of careers socities in the UK? Our elections will be taking place in  in Week 2 of the coming term. 3 Teach First
Want a more rewarding career? Take up the challenge. With more schools now taking part in the scheme than ever before and two new regions there is an even greater demand for Teach First teachers so the application deadline has been extended. More specifically there is still capacity in Maths, Science, IT and English. Also don't feel you have to be studying a Maths degree to apply for the Maths scheme. If you are doing a course where Maths plays a big part such as Economics and you studied A Level Maths then you are eligable to apply. Click here for more information and to apply.

4 Careers in the EU
"Are you interested in a lifetime of different challenging jobs that make a real difference? Want to work in an environment where you are constantly expected to, and lucratively rewarded, for developing new skills? Committee Elections

We're looking for new committee members to take over the reigns at the Bright Futures society.

All positions are great ways to add extra experience on to your CV and joining the committee is seen as a proactive step when applying for internships and graduate jobs.

If you're at all interested in any of the positions, please email brightfutures@yusu.org and we will arrange a quick chat to answer your questions. 

Elections will be held Summer Term Week 2 (Date, Time, Location TBC).

As part of a national organisation, committee members are invited to exclusive recruitment and skills events with some of the biggest names, gaining close business contacts with heads of HR in their respective companies. You have the opportunity to be mentored by the likes of Accenture, and receive recognition on a national level with an awards ceremony at the end of the year.

We are also looking for people outside of our usual remit of Economics/Accounting and Finance. Students on humanities, IT, languages, psychology....pretty much any other degree course are all welcome to apply. We appreciate diversity, and it will ensure the society caters to students from all courses.

President: 
Responsible for the overall vision and direction of Bright Futures York, the president will be the first point of call for correspondence between the national Bright Futures team and any corporate investors. Further responsibilities are to: 

- Hold a short weekly meeting and regular email catch-up to receive and give updates on events and important society information
- Delegate tasks to the other members of the committee and ensure that each person fulfils their roles. 
- Book specific events and workshops with corporate firms and ultimately be accountable for each one.
- Found and strengthen relationships with related and non-related societies such as the IFS, AccFin society, York Entrepreneurs, the Management school etc.

Secretary: 
Responsible for all communication inside and outside of the society, the Secretary will send out weekly e-mails to our mailing list, informing members of all the things happening within the society (events, news, webinars, etc). They will also be involved with the society website, updating and submitting new articles and event information. 

Treasurer: 
The Treasurer’s responsibilities are to: 
- Ensure the society accounts are kept in order by collecting expenses from events and setting out a clear projection for the year ahead.
- Secure grants from the annual YUSU fund and sponsorship from any available firms
- Communicate clearly and effectively to all other committee members.

Events Officers [2]:
Events officers keep a close contact with our corporate investors during and after any events they hold on campus. They are responsible for:

- Booking and setting up rooms for events
- Creating Facebook/Groupspaces events 
- Ordering any food or drink that we need
- Opening and closing the events we hold with a short talk introducing the society, delivering news and upcoming events.

- Collecting testimonials from event holders and conducting a short interview.
- Communicating with the Corporate Liaison officers to create the term/year reports.

Corporate Liaison Officers (2)
- Work with the President to communicate regularly with all the firms we wish to hold events with for the next year, set up dates and inform events officers of all necessary information.
- Sending regular emails with our progress to all firms we have held events with and national Bright Futures investors.
- Working with each other to compile an end of term/year report on our events, including testimonials and event write-ups.

Marketing Officer:
A fundamental role within the society. The press and publicity officers oversee and create the outside image of the society. Through articles on campus media, posters displayed around campus and links within social networks they will aim to bring Bright Futures events to as many students on campus as possible. They are jointly responsible for creating links between other relevant societies and encouraging attendance at all careers events. P&P Officers will have: 

- Very strong interpersonal skills.
- Know or make contact with key people within departments to send event invites through.
- Friends within all years and differing degree courses within the university.
- A fairly creative mind for posters/leaflets.

 
IT Officer
Responsible for running the society website, collecting event reports/write-ups, pictures, blogs and other news and updating it regularly. The website is our vehicle for promotion to all investors and potential new partnerships, so it is essential it looks as good as possible. Experience with online content management systems such as Joomla and Wordpress would be a bonus, but no specific IT/computer knowledge is required. All training will be provided.

J.P Morgan - Focus Group offering £20 - Tuesday 12th March, 12:30 - 14:00. Places are limited for this event so email Careers@York.ac.uk. You must be in your final or penultimate year in order to be eligible.


Enterprise: Ideas Generation Event
-This practical session on idea generation (ideation) will provide you with some techniques for boosting your creativity and ways to filter your thoughts to enable you to pinpoint those all important quality ideas. Tuesday 12th March, 17:15 - 19:15, V/123 (Vanburgh).

Don't worry though, Bright Futures, the Economics Society, and the Investment and Finance Society are hosting a movie night on Tuesday. The movie being shown is Limitless, a great movie with a loose link to finance, careers & personal development.
The movie is being shown for free. So join us for the evening to kick back and enjoy the film and our hospitality.

Doors open at 19:00 so that we can start the film at 19:15.

Next Tuesday, Bright Futures will be hosting a movie night along with the Economics Society and the Investment and Finance Society. The film to be screened is Limitless (2011), an intellegent action-thriller. The Film starts at 19:15, so try and get there fifteen minutes early for a good seat.
